The Shaw family celebrate winning Chip shop of the year by Star readers Isabelle, Natalie, Richard, Lucy and Diane Shaw with Karen Smith

Shaw’s fish and chip shop on Bridge Street, Killamarsh, has come out on top in The Star’s competition to find the best fish and chip shop in the city.

Hundreds of loyal customers had their say on which chippy should come out on top during the weeks of the contest.

And although it was a close-run thing, Shaws was named number one, battering the rest of the entries with their sheer number of votes.

Owner Richard Shaw and his team were handed their winning prizes this week.

Richard said: “I am ecstatic about this, it’s such a great feeling to have won.”

He added: “I have run this business for the past five years and this is the second time I have won – I previously won in 2014. It’s brilliant that customers have taken the time to vote for us and I’d like to thank them all.”

Oceana take 3rd place in the Star Chip shop of the year

In second place, just behind Shaws, was another well-known and popular chippy, Frymaster, of Attercliffe Road.

Owner Richard Pearce, said it was a “bitter sweet feeling” to be runner up on this occasion as he was hoping to make it three number one spots in a row.

He said: “I am pleased we have made the top three, but it would have been nice to get a hat trick of titles.

“However, we are really pleased that customers have once again taken the time to vote for us.”

He added: “We open for lunchtime trade and on Fridays we have about 11 staff working here and this is reward for the hard work they have put in.”

In third place was Oceana, of Ben Lane in Wisewood.

The owner, Kyriakos Christodoulou, known as “Giggsy”, said he felt “great” to have come in the top three and added: “We came fourth last year and now we have moved up one place – it’s great. I have run this for the past four years, this is a family run business and I’d like to thank my customers for voting for us.”
