The 67-year-old, who was officially unveiled at a press conference at AESSEAL New York Stadium, has 16 games to keep the Millers up.

“It would be right up there with anything I’ve done if we can achieve it,” said the manager who has won seven promotions in his career, including taking Sheffield United into the Premier League 10 years ago.

“For a team like Rotherham to be holding their own in the Championship is a fabulous achievement.

“All I have asked the players is, give me 100 per cent.

“We’re all in it together and I’ve told them to not to worry about making mistakes.”

Rotherham are in the bottom three and face Birmingham City tomorrow at AESSEAL New York Stadium which will be close to sold out as fans turn out to herald Warnock’s arrival.

The new man hopes to use the loan market to strengthen his midfield, but likes what he saw when he took training for the first time this morning and isn’t planning wholesale changes for tomorrow’s clash.

“The two Wards, Danny and Grant, they impress me,” he said. “The lad up front, Jonson Clarke-Harris, I like the look of him.

“Grant has a bit to learn but he wants to do well.”

Warnock, whose family home is in Cornwall, has brought in long-time partner Kevin Blackwell as his No 2 and the pair plan to base themselves in Rotherham after agreeing a deal to the end of the season.

“There would have been one or two easier jobs than doing this, but it’s a very challenging and exciting prospect,” he said.

“Six of the next eight games are against teams in the top eight. It’s a difficult ask but I’ve always enjoyed challenges like this.”
