A BLAZE which burned for hours at a Sheffield refuse depot was accidental, a fire service investigation revealed.

Around 30 firefighters dealt with the fire in a building owned by Veolia on Tinsley Park Road, Attercliffe, on Wednesday.

Crews were alerted to the blaze at 9.50am and remained at the scene until 7pm.

An investigation revealed that items deep under a pile of rubbish in the depot had been generating heat which caused the fire.

The Veolia building is known as a waste transfer station, where collection vehicles dump cargo prior to it being loaded into larger vehicles for transfer to Veolia’s incinerator or for recycling.

The blaze led to the evacuation of Veolia staff and employees from neighbouring businesses.
