Rum tasting festival rolls into Sheffield

Rum-lovers will have a shot at tasting 100 spirits from around the world when a festival arrives in Sheffield later this month.

On Friday March 3, The Trafalgar Warehouse in the city centre will be hosting the new two-day event.

It will introduce guests to over 100 different rums from around the globe combined with live steel drums and salsa, great food and free giveaways.

Lucy Douglas, the founder of the travelling festival, said: “The growth in the rum market and evolution in the variety of flavours and styles has been phenomenal over the last couple of years.

“Having been to some amazing beer festivals and gin festivals we decided to set up something for rum drinkers, somewhere fun where they could try new and exciting rums whilst listening to live music, eating great food and be surrounded by like-minded people.”

Rums at the festiva will be grouped into six categories - white, golden, dark, Navy, spiced or overproofed - and there will be staff to help revellers choose.

Tickets cost £7.50, and include a festival gass, as wel as brochure.

On the same drink theme, two Sheffield businesses have been nominated for awards.

The Society of Independent Brewers has revealed the shortlist for the SIBA Business & Industry Awards 2017 - of which the winners will be announced at the Beer X event in Sheffield at the weekend.

Sheffield Tap, at the railway station, is up for the UK’s best independent craft beer or bar, Hop Hideout on Abbeydale Road for the best craft beer retailer and Sheffied Beer Week - which is running this week - for best independent craft beer promotion.

Events for Sheffield Beer Week include a talk on the chemistry of medieval beer at the Red Deer on Pitt Street as well as beer and cheese tasting at Portland House, on Ecclesall Road.

On Thursday The Bath hotel will welcome one of the UK’s most loved breweries, Wild Beer Co, to take over the taps and host a Meet the Brewer evening. and over the weekend the Beer Alive! festival - part of Beer X - returns to iceSheffield.
