The event was free thanks to sponsorship from Unite the Union and raised cash for local women’s charities Sheffield Rape Crisis and Ashiana Sheffield. The screening marked the start of ‘International Women’s Month’ – a series of events organised by the Women’s Committee at Sheffield Student’s Union. This year’s theme is celebrating women activists and change-makers, which is encapsulated in the film ‘Belle’, a period drama about the daughter of a slave who helps bring an end to the slave trade.

Paul Blomfield MP said: “I really looked forward to hosting this free screening of Belle along with the Women’s Committee, only made possible through Unite’s generous support. Since I was elected I’ve held this event every year to celebrate International Women’s Day by raising money for some fantastic women’s charities.

“I couldn’t imagine a better way to kick off celebrating International Women’s Month at the Students’ Union. I’m excited for students, staff and the local community to come together on this important day and raise funds for charities.”
