ONE of Sheffield’s most successful home-grown brands is poised for expansion in the hands of new owners.
Catherine’s Choice has a reputation for award-winning organic preserves, having won 12 medals in the Great Taste Awards. And it is heading for fresh success after being taken over by Shaun Bamford and his family, of Sharrow.
After years of experience as a food industry manager, Shaun, 38, is relishing the hands-on nature of his new role.
“I love the fact that I have to do everything,” he says. “One day I’m making the product, the next I’m talking to someone who may want to buy it. If anything goes wrong I have to mend the machine and I’m also teaching myself to produce the labels!”
Shaun spent three months working alongside company founders, Catherine and David Trickett, before striking out on his own. Long-standing partner Tamar Millen is his co-director and her brother, Paul, their only staff.
Between them they have reviewed the entire product range, updated the branding, refined the recipes and developed a few new ones too.
Ketchup – the first of the new range – is already proving popular and Shaun plans to launch his caramelised carrot chutney in the new year.
“I’ve built up a good knowledge of the product, I’ve developed my skills and we’ve started to attract new customers now,” he says.
Catherine’s Choice, based at the Alison Business Centre, was a founder member of the Made in Sheffield group and one of a select range of small city companies entitled to bear the Sheffield Food mark.
