Kim Streets, CEO of Museums Sheffield, which operates the gallery, said: “It is great to be in the top 20. It has consistently performed really highly. It’s that brilliant combination of a strong creative programme and its positioning right in the heart of the city.”

Meanwhile, of paid-for attractions in the region, Yorkshire Wildlife Park’s visitor numbers were up 22 per cent to 678,000.

The Yorkshire Sculpture Park, close to Barnsley, had a 46 per cent increase in visitors to 638,907, having been the first venue outside London to host the Tower of London Poppies. It was the region’s third most popular free attraction.

Flamingo Land, at Kirby Misperton in North Yorkshire, had 1.47m visitors, ahead of Stonehenge and London Zoo.
