Sheffield brass bands blow away rivals
Two brassy Sheffield bands have blown away the competition to take first prizes in the Yorkshire Brass Band Championships.
Stannington Brass Band returned home triumphant on Saturday after taking first place at the competition in St Georges Hall, Bradford.
The band beat ten others competing in the Second Section and now qualify for the national finals in Cheltenham later this year.
Chapeltown Silver secured first place in the First Section, beating 12 others to the title.
They will also be heading to compete in Cheltenham later this year.
Stannington Musical Director Derek Renshaw said: “I am absolutely delighted with the result.
“The players displayed the sound and maturity of a band to be reckoned with and this was recognised by all on the day.
“Saturday’s performance was special and the remarks from the adjudicators were some of the best I personally have ever read.
“The band go from strength to strength and I am most excited about the future. Our biggest task ahead now is raising the funds that will enable the band to compete at the Finals.”
The band will be reprising its prize-winning performance at a concert at the Lomas Hall, Stannington, on April 23.
Other Sheffield bands also gave pitch-perfect performances in the competition.
In the Fourth Section, Rockingham Band scooped second place and will also be heading to Cheltenham.
In the Third Section Oughtibridge narrowly missed out on a Nationals Finals with their third, but second-placed Dronfield will be making the journey.
