Roger Gibbon, aged 40, will attempt to ride 23 ascents of the Mam-Nick road-climb today, which is the same as riding up all 4809 metres of the French mountain.

He is raising money for Qhubeka, a charity that provides bomb-proof bicycles to people in rural Africa who would otherwise need to walk long distances to access education, healthcare, shops and community services.

Roger, of Whirlow, said: “I was on a ride with some friends and the topic came up about whether we could ride up Mont Blanc.

“I said I could do it. Before I knew where I was, a donation page had been set up and I was definitely doing it.

“It’s going to be a tough challenge and the weather is not very favourable. It’s for such a good cause, though. So I’m ready.”

Roger, who works as an IT consultant, is hoping to complete the challenge in just seven hours.

The fundraising target for the solo attempt is £750, which will pay for five bicycles.

Roger said: “I’m really hoping to raise more than that. Every penny will be a step closer to providing opportunity.

“Imagine the impact of owning a bike has when your only mode of transport is walking. Imagine the potential this unlocks for children in rural areas not able to access schools due to the distance required to walk every day.”

The ride starts at Barber Booth, near the village of Edale, and ascends for 2.1km up the side of Mam Tor, gaining 213m in altitude over that distance.

Twenty-three circuits are required to achieve the total altitude of the Mont Blanc summit.

Roger is a seasoned road cyclist and takes his fitness very seriously.

The climb is iconic amongst local riders and is notoriously challenging.
