Sheffield Eagles: Aston looks to rekindle loan deals

The Eagles chief has been looking to bolster his squad since the Easter Monday defeat against Dewsbury, as he looks to plug the gaps following injuries, and a loss of form which has threatened to derail any run to the top four.

Aston has confirmed that he was close to adding at least two new faces before the comprehensive defeat to London, but injuries at the players’ respective clubs scuppered any potential loan deals at the 11th hour.

“What we do know, and it is nothing different to what I have said before, is that we are short,” Aston explained.

“We need a few people in, that hasn’t changed. It certainly hasn’t changed in the last month.

“We thought that we had a couple close to being over the line, but they have been pulled back in because of injuries at their parent clubs.We are hopeful that in the next week or so we can get some players in, and that might put a bit of a smile back on my face.”

Aston revealed that the two players in question were both loan deals from clubs in Super League, and he will revisit the situation again this week ahead of Friday’s home clash with Dewsbury.

“They were one-month deals,” said the 48-year-old.

“They are good kids who want to play. I need some enthusiasm. I need players who can play, and if you are in Super League environments it is because you can play. These lads are going to want to come here and impress.”

Aston is hoping the arrival of some new faces will boost his options, after stating a lack of competition has left his hands tied as he looks to make changes to his side.
