Sheffield Eagles prospect back after '˜horrific' injury

Youngster Greg Burns could be set to feature for Sheffield Eagles during the Championship Shield fixtures after starting full training following long term injury.

The hooker has been earmarked for a big future but this season his progress has been stunted by a long term shoulder problem which has kept him out for the entire Championship season.

Now Director Mark Aston said he will look to give the 21-year-old Academy graduate some game time before the end of the campaign.

“Greg is coming back to full training in the next week or so which is great news for us and the lad” Aston said. “It will be great to get him a game before the end of the season which will give him a bit of confidence after a fairly horrific injury.”

Burns impressed last season in his fleeting first team outings which resulted in him signing a new deal at the end of the campaign. After a week away from competitive action, Eagles start their Championship Shield campaign at Halifax on Sunday.

With the deadline for additions now passing, Aston has stated that it is imperative that his squad remain injury free, as he looks to guide his side to some silverware after a largely forgettable season.

“Injuries can play a part,” he added. “You need a solid base to end the season with. If some teams pick up a couple of injuries and your squad is short then it is a problem because dual reg has gone now. You cannot bring any more players in, but we are very healthy going into the last period of the season. The lads have had four days away, they have come back in and we are training hard this week.

“We have some confidence and some belief, we shouldn’t have any doubts now going into this final stretch of the season. I am really happy that we have had a break, the lads have been refreshed and they are buzzing knowing that we have a big game against Halifax to look forward to at the end of the week.”
