Bobby Smith, an activist for the New Fathers 4 Justice group, climbed onto the roof of Stevenage police station dressed as Sesame Street character Elmo on February 15. He let off a flare and spent several hours there with a campaign banner.

He was found guilty of aggravated trespass at Stevenage Magistrates’ Court yesterday (Friday, April 8) and given a community order to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work. He was also told to pay £620 in costs and a £60 surcharge.

Smith is standing for the Give Me Back Elmo party in the coming Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough by-election.

New Fathers 4 Justice campaigns for equal rights for fathers in divorce and separation proceedings and reform of the family courts.

Smith stood against David Cameron, again dressed as Elmo, in the 2015 general election,
