Sheffield FC took the bragging rights at Dronfield running out 3-2 winners over neighbours Stocksbridge Park Steels after fending off a late fight back.

Club got off to the perfect start when two former Steels players combined to put the home side 1-0 up inside the first minute as Ashley Longstaff headed in from Ben Turner’s pin-point cross.

Sheffield were making all the early running and doubled their lead with another headed goal, this time Warren Burrell nodding in from a Matt Roney corner.

The home side went further ahead as Longstaff tapped in his second making the most of goalkeeper Liam Flynn’s error.

The keeper made a mends making a fine stop from James Gregory before Stocksbridge created their best chance of the half when Lee Garside got in on goal only to be thwarted by a smart save from Jake Eastwood. Club almost had a fourth as Joel Purkiss saw his effort hit the post. But in first half stoppage time Stocksbridge clawed a goal back direct from a Rory Coleman free-kick to give the visitors hope.

Substitute Zeph Thomas might well have restored the host’s three goal cushion after the break only to drag his shot wide after getting in on goal, while at the offer end Eastwood made another good save to deny Garside

Sheffield looked comfortable on the lead until Ryan Laight pulled another back with a 20-yard thunderbolt seven minutes from timer to leave the game in the balance. And Steels almost grabbed an unlikely point when Garside’s effort in the final minute struck the post.

Buxton came from 2-0 down at the Silverlands to beat their Derbyshire neighbours Matlock Town 3-2, while Frickley Athletic were held t a 1-1 home draw by Whitby Town.
