Firefighters braved the heat and smoke to enter the burning house on Glenwood Crescent, Chapeltown, and found a man in his 60s slumped in a bedroom.

He was unconscious and was carried out of his home to paramedics, who treated him at the scene before rushing him to hospital.

Firefighters were later told that medics had been unable to revive him.

An inquest into the death, in the early hours of Saturday, is to be held - but firefighters said an initial investigation suggests the fire had been started deliberately.

They believe the fire victim was responsible for the blaze, which started in a different bedroom to the one in which he was found.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed: “A man has died following a house fire in Chapeltown.

“Fire crews from Tankersley, Elm Lane and Rivelin stations were called to the incident at around 1am on Saturday.

“They found the two-storey, semi-detached property on Glenwood Crescent well alight.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the house and carried out a man, who was in his 60s, from the first floor bedroom.”

He aded: “The man was taken to hospital by ambulance, but sadly later died.

“An initial fire cause investigation found the fire started in the bedroom, and is thought to have been started deliberately.”

n Firefighters dealt with a number of arson attacks over the weekend, including one where a bin was set alight outside Nobles Amusements, Cheapside, Barnsley, at 12.30am on Sunday.
