A request to set up a gifts fund for overseas visitors coming to Sheffield will not go ahead because it is not ‘affordable’.
Coun Vickie Priestley, who was Lord Mayor of Sheffield in 2013-14, recommended a budget be given to allow mayors to offer gifts to visitors in her annual report, which was discussed by councillors this week.
The report said: “When Sheffield receives any overseas visitors they come with gifts andunfortunately the Lord Mayor has very little to give in return.”
However, Coun Ben Curran, cabinet member for finance, said: “It would be nice to offer gifts to visitors as part of our wider work promoting Sheffield.
“However, it is not affordable in the current climate where we are having to make cuts across the board due to Government cuts.”
