The tread had completed worn away and the tyre was bulging.

A photograph of the tyre has been published by South Yorkshire Police to remind motorists to check that theirs are roadworthy.

The tyre was spotted by police officers patrolling Parson Cross and Southey yesterday morning.

A police spokesman said: "As well as dealing with motorists for a number of issues including mobile and MOT offences, the driver of the vehicle which this rather sorry looking tyre belongs to was stopped and dealt with for tyre tread and tyre bulge offences.

"A tyre in this state represents a significant danger.

"As such the driver was dealt with robustly and is facing a hefty fine and points on his licence. "Please take the time to check that your vehicle is in a roadworthy and safe condition before heading out on our roads."
