Sheffield mural stretching 20 metres goes on display

Michael Harter spent months painting the art work at a redeveloped factory building, called the Bamforth Building, for not-for- profit organisation the Burton Street Foundation.

The finished mural spreads across a 20 metre wide wall and reaches eight metres in height.

Michael’s artwork shows Sheffield through nine tall windows, each with a snapshot of life in the city, from the industrial history and heritage to the beautiful hills of the peak district.

He said: “My job has been to bring colour, light and warmth onto the walls of this huge cavern of a building.

“The artwork is a mixture between the bright and bold, to the detailed and intricate, with several smaller windows above the others with figures reflecting scenes of work and play.

“They reflect the endeavours of the buildings occupants and clients in a freer and more lyrical way.

“The windows seem to look out onto the landscape beyond, suggesting industrial premises, wild scrubland and looming pylons.”

Members of the Burton Street Foundation first noticed Michael’s work when he worked with Joy Reynolds Theatre Company, producing several pieces of work for the organisation over several years.

Members then approached him in the hopes that he would bring his original and creative spin to the once blank wall.

Clare Mappin, Managing Director of the Burton Street Foundation, said everyone was very pleased with the finished piece.

“Every time you look at it you notice something different. Everybody that looks at it sees it in a different way, or points out something I haven’t noticed yet. Our clients, staff and community users have really enjoyed seeing it take shape.”

The mural will be on display at the building, in Hillsborough, as part of the Art from the Heart exhibition which opens o Friday March 31 and runs through to Thursday April 6.
