We are just about halfway through the summer holidays - not the best news for teachers or children.

But it is also hard for families trying to make sure everyone has fun even when money is tight.

So I asked our readers for their suggestions on where to go and what to do when there isn’t enough spare cash to head outside Sheffield and its surrounding areas.

There are plenty of great events and attractions in the city which cost absolutely nothing so where would you recommend?

We would love to pass on your tips, recommendations and advice to other Sheffield families so please do get in touch. And if you have a photo of your favourite staycation spot then we are happy to include that too.

Don’t forget we are also printing eight pages of readers’ review of some of the area’s best attraction, sports and entertainment every Monday.

The next one includes discount for martial arts with SIV as well as the Chestnut Centre and adventure golf.

In the meantime, here are the best six suggestions so far:

n Sam Schofield votes for climbing: “Go rock climbing at the Climbing Works, Foundry Climbing or Edge Climbing.

Or if the sun is shining and you want to try climbing outside try the Peak District. It is right on our doorstep and there are numerous locations within 20 minutes ... Stanage and Burbage being two of the most popular.”

n Steve Clifton ‏opted for a trip out to somewhere beautiful but not well visited: “Low Bradfield is stunning and has something for everyone. It’s Sheffield’s best kept secret, until now!”

n Anita Dell picked somewhere which is free and fun no matter what the weather: “I would definitely go to Weston Park with the kids - outside in the park if it is sunny and inside the museum if it is rainy. It’s so versatile and so much for the kids to do. We’re lucky to have it in the city.

n Joyce Bullivant still loves her favourite but also has memories of it from the past: “My vote goes to the Botanical Gardens. I wish they still had the aviary but it is still good.”

n Mark Farnsworth also has memories of his top tip and still likes a visit: “Heeley City Farm is free and has something for every generation! I grew up around the corner and loved weekend trips!”

n It might not be free but you can pick up great deals and Scott Gray has several reasons for picking Owlerton Stadium on his staycation: “You can’t beat a good night at Owlerton Stadium. It is good fun for all the family and you might win a few pennies!”
