Today the champions announced the 34-year-old forward had inked a new one year deal.

Fretter’s groin injury kept him out of 39 games last season, but in March he sent a message to management, via The Star saying: “I want the owner and coaches to know that I am passed the injury now and I will play next year.”

After conversations with coach Paul Thompson, he was duly re-employed.

“Colton is a game changer” said Thompson. “He can do things that others can’t, a special talent, and I’m thrilled he is back with us. We missed him last year, we missed his shot, a player that can do something from the outside. I enjoyed my time working with him and understand it was a frustrating year for him. I’m excited at the thought of him fully fit and playing at the top of his game. I see a hunger in eyes and a desire to be here in Sheffield.

“The truth is that we are a better team with Colton in our shirt.”

Fretter doubled up his playing duties over the last two years whilst studying at the University of Sheffield. Next season will be hockey only for him. “I’ve loved the studying but getting back to just playing hockey next year is something that excites me. I love it here in Sheffield and want the people to know that I’m fully focussed and raring to go”

Fretter has scored 42 goals for Steelers in 96 games, since joining the club from Swiss club Olten.
