Sheffield Steelers: Mathieu Roy relishing link-up with Mike Ratchuk

Sheffield Steelers' top scorer Mathieu Roy has won a championship before alongside new signing Mike Ratchuk - and believes they can do so again this season.

And if Roy’s dream comes true, Steelers will create Elite League history by becoming the first team to win three league championships in a row.

“That’s the driving ambition,” admits Roy.

““We know it won’t be easy... we know the other teams will do everything they can to try and stop us.

“But I can’t wait. The season could start again tomorrow for me. I’m excited and really motivated.”

Roy and Ratchuk were key members of the Florida Everblades side that won the ECHL championship, and Steelers’ new signing was the East Coast League’s top-scoring defensemen in 2014 with 15 goals.

“Mike is one of the nicest and fastest skaters I have ever seen,” Roy added.

“He was a major part of that Kelly Cup championship, and has all the offensive tools you could ever want.

“I’m confident he will do a terrific job for us next year

“On and off the ice he is a great character. People will love him here in Sheffield... we have a great room already and he will fit right in.

“I’m very pleased he joined us and not one of our rival teams.”

Head coach Paul Thompson still has four positions to fill on his roster, including a centre-man to play with Roy and most probably Colton Fretter.

“Whoever Thommo chooses will be good with me,” said Roy.

“I look at the depth of our squad and its all full of quality. It excites me, and the season can’t come soon enough.”
