Globetrotting defenceman Russ Moyer today became Paul Thompson’s first import signing for Sheffield Steelers.

The Canaian arrived from Swedish side Karlskrona. Before that he played in the same country for three seasons following two in Denmark.

“This is a very good signing for us” said Thompson. “Russ played last year for a team that wasn’t fancied to get promoted but did so. Before playing in Sweden Russ was a more explosive and dynamic player, more offensive. In Sweden he had to be more rounded and develop his game and adapt to their style. We will be looking for him to be a good all-around D man and expect him to log the minutes and play a part on our power-play.

“I coached against him two years ago and was impressed with him. Also Russ played for my former club in Aalborg, the feedback I received there was excellent. He will add to an already very competent back end.”

Moyer, 32, who played in front of former Steelers’ goalie Jody Lehman in 2009-10, described his move to Sheffield as the “start of a new chapter.

“Last year in Sweden was incredible, ending with winning promotion. Now though it’s time for a change and having spoken with players who had played in the UK I decided England was a good fit for me. My wife had applied for schooling in Sheffield (University) and I was lucky enough that the club liked the sound of me.

“I’d like to think I am a good, all around D man and that I will add some points during the year.”

The two-game AHL man added: “Having played where I have I also hope my experience comes through. I have a calmness about my play that comes from that experience.

“The Champions League is something that we also are looking forward to, another new challenge and a great way to start our season.”
