Sheffield student's role in Syria conference

Beatrice Arscott, aged 22, travelled to Jordan ahead of the Syria Donor Conference, where world leaders pledged £6.8 billion in aid to help Syrians affected by the five-year conflict there.

Bea, who lived in Broomhill before she graduated in geography from The University of Sheffield and now works at the Department for International Development, looked at how to provide education to refugee children during her visit.

She said: “Around half of all refugees in the region are children and DFID has been doing some great work in making sure none of them get left behind in terms of education.

“We really wanted the conference to address the longer term needs of people affected by the crisis and providing education means we can give them greater hope for the future.

Beatrice added: “I hope that the commitments and pledges made by world leaders will continue to support those affected by the conflict and transform lives across the region.

“This is the world’s biggest humanitarian crisis - so it is really important that we are working together to achieve our common goals.”
