SHEFFIELD Theatres has been named Regional Theatre of the Year by The Stage 100 Awards 2013.

The Crucible, Lyceum and Studio Theatres received high praise from the judging panel for the range and quality of their in-house productions, as well as their touring shows.

A statement on The Stage’s website praised Sheffield Theatres for standing out in a very competitive category.

It said: “With artistic director Daniel Evans at the helm and in spite of funding cuts from both its local authority and Arts Council England in recent years, the judges felt that Sheffield Theatres continues to produce exemplary shows, serving a local and national audience that greatly values its work.”

The award comes as Daniel Evans and Chief Executive Dan Bates both entered the top 20 of The Stage 100 – a list of the most influential people in performing arts.

“It has been an extraordinary 12 months for us and we’re so thrilled with this award,” said Daniel.

“It is a testament to the loyalty and support of our audiences, the dedication of our actors and creative teams, the commitment of our partners and of course, the passion of our staff.

“I can’t think of a better way to begin a new year.”

The Stage 100 Awards, now in its third year, recognise the outstanding organisations working in theatre today.

Other winners this year include Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre for Best London Theatre and The Union Theatre in Southwark for Fringe Theatre of the Year.

Alistair Smith, deputy editor of The Stage and chair of The Stage 100 Awards judging panel, said: “It proved another incredibly difficult year for the panel with many worthy nominees in all our categories.

“But, we felt that our eventual winners were the best of the best and reflected the superb work that is going on in theatres and in the performing arts more broadly across the UK.”

Sheffield Theatres will receive its awards at The Stage’s New Year Party at the New London Theatre on January 25.
