The sixth-placed Tigers experienced a solid albeit unspectacular start to the season but stormed to an eye-opening win over title favourites Glasgow at Owlerton last Thursday.

They followed up their triumph with a hard-fought away win at Berwick two days later before seeing their home meeting on Thursday rained off. Skipper Stead insists he never had any doubts that the side would eventually unlock their potential. He is now keen to see them triumph at the Eddie Wright Raceway for the second time this season as they look to establish themselves as early front-runners in the Premier League table.

Said Stead: “On Thursday the rain just didn’t let up and there was nothing we could do. We go to Scunthorpe on Sunday feeling confident after two great performances, and having already won there once this year we’ll be looking to do the same again. They’ve made a couple of changes so they’ll no doubt be a tough challenge, but if we pick up where we left off I can’t see why we can’t win again.”

He added: “We’ve really come into our own the last couple of meetings, but I don’t think there was ever any doubt regarding what this team was capable of.

“I was always confident the team would be more than capable of doing the job, it’s just taken a bit of time for everyone to bed in.

“That was always going to be the case to a certain extent with a few new guys in the team, but now we are starting to fulfil our potential and I’m feeling confident about the rest of the year.”
