Defender Chris Morgan may go down in United's history, but his time at Bramall Lane got off to an inauspicious start when he agreed terms with then-Blades boss Neil Warnock'¦Â on the golf course, without knowing a thing!

Morgan revealed the story during an appearance on the popular Undr The Cosh podcast, which was recorded live at Bramall Lane and raised money for Mind and the Gem Appeal, with another former Blade Jamie Hoyland joining hosts Jon Parkin and two Chris Browns.

Morgan revealed how he was lined up to join Cardiff under Dave Jones when Barnsley's financial troubles spelled the end of his time at Oakwell.

'They were in admininstration, weren't paying the wages and let it go too far, so lads could have walked away for free,' Morgan said.

'So I was supposed to be going to Cardiff for talks and I'd gone golfing at Wortley. I came off the course and had missed calls from my missus, so straightaway you start fearing the worse with the kids etc.

'I rang her straight back and she said '˜what have you been doing? You've got to go this afternoon and sign for Sheffield United'.

'I asked her what she was on about and told her I was going to Cardiff tomorrow to speak to Dave Jones.

'She said '˜I've been on the phone with Neil Warnock all afternoon and we've agreed wages'¦Â everything's all done'. She told me I had to go and get my boots from Barnsley, I was on my way to Cornwall the day after to meet the lads in pre-season.

'I came to Bramall Lane and there was a contract for me on the secretary's desk, I never read it; just signed it and jumped in the car to Cornwall.

'Dave Jones rang me on the way to make sure I was on the way down, I said '˜yeah I'm in the car but I'm on my way to Cornwall for pre-season' and just kept on the motorway.'

Morgan also revealed that Phil Jagielka, the former England defender, didn't want to play centre-half at United and saw himself as a midfield player.

Jagielka eventually won 40 England caps in the position.Â
