Sheffield United Fan's Column: Something is brewing at Bramall Lane

It was as if the team made a pact to refuse to leave the field until they had won. I know that’s not strictly possible, because had it been 0-0 at full time they would have looked silly playing against no opponents, but you get the gist.

As the minutes passed, the players seemed more and more determined to score. When the goal finally came, from captain Billy Sharp, it wasn’t really a surprise.

When you can replace Paul Coutts with somebody of the quality of Samir Carruthers, and when the classy Jay O’Shea can come on late to make such an impact, you just expect that sort of thing to happen.

The number of changes made at Bristol Rovers on Tuesday night without ill effect emphasises the strength of the squad which has been built at Bramall Lane since Chris Wilder became manager last summer.

Four points from two away games is a satisfactory return, with the two biggest home games of the season to come, starting against Scunthorpe tomorrow, before Bolton Wanderers visit Bramall Lane next weekend.

Meanwhile, there’s a bit of a campaign at the moment to have one of the stands at Bramall Lane named after the great Tony Currie.

Now, I don’t have strong feelings either way about naming stands, but my choice, should I have one, would be for the Woodward and Currie Stand, as these two are as inseparable in football history as Best and Charlton and Keegan and Toshack.

I think that would be a good way to celebrate these two United greats.
