Sheffield United: Incredible backing inspires John Fleck

Sheffield United midfielder John Fleck has described the club's supporters as 'incredible' after acknowledging the have inspired Chris Wilder's players with their backing in recent weeks.

Over 55,000 people have watched United’s last two home games while, after enjoying a 3,500 strong following at Rochdale earlier this month, 1,667 travelled to Tuesday’s fixture with Oxford.

Fleck said: “It’s great. The fans have been incredible. Hopefully it will continue like that and help push us through.

“I think everyone is pushing in the same direction. They want us to push forward more and we’re trying to do that for them. There’s a great connection there at the moment.”

United are eight points clear at the top of the League One table after beating Michael Appleton’s side. Without a match this weekend - Millwall, their scheduled opponents, face Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup - Wilder’s squad returns to action at Swindon Town on Tuesday.

Second-placed Fleetwood host Bolton Wanderers, in fourth, at Highbury today while fellow promotion contenders Scunthorpe visit Gillingham.

“We’re a tight knit bunch, everybody gets along well,” Fleck said. “But, when the whole place is working together, it really does make a difference, definitely. When you know you’ve got people behind you, it helps drive you through the tough periods you always get in games or helps you keep the momentum when you’re pressing forward.”
