Sheffield Wednesday: Carlos Carvalhal hails first deal for George Hirst

Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal says he is 'absolutely sure' that George Hirst can be a star of the future at Hillsborough.

The 17 year old son of Wednesday legend David Hirst, signed his first professional contract this week, capping off a fine year which saw the striker also make a goalscoring debut in an England shirt.

Carvalhal says the Owls Academy coaches, headed up by Dean Ramsdale, deserve a lot of credit for Hirst's development, at a time when the project is going through a lot of restructural change.

And he is backing Hirst to one day follow in the footsteps of his father by making a breakthrough into the first team in the 'short to medium' term.

"It's good for the academy because they are doing very good work," said Carvalhal. "Dean and all the lads there are doing fantastic in the Academy.

"They have changed a lot of things in this season, we can say that this is the zero year for the academy of Sheffield Wednesday and in the zero year to sign a contract with a boy of 17 years old who is playing in the national team for England it is important and good because in the Academy we try to get players for the first team.

"George is a good striker, he's a boy with a talent and I believe that if he starts normal evolution he will be one of the strikers of the team in the short-medium term, I am absolutely sure."
