Midfielder Kieran Lee arguably should have been awarded a penalty in the closing stages of their Hillsborough draw with Queens Park Rangers while Michael Turner’s strike against Rotherham United was incorrectly disallowed for offside.

To compound the Owls’ frustration, the club’s appeal against Barry Bannan’s controversial sending off at Nottingham Forest was rejected by the Football Association on Tuesday. Influential midfielder Bannan will now miss their next three fixtures, starting with Saturday’s visit of second-from-bottom Charlton Athletic. Wednesday have won just one of their last four outings on home soil, a resounding 4-0 success over Brentford.

Regardless of whether refereeing decisions go their way or not, head coach Carlos Carvalhal expects his squad to avoid haranguing officials.

“Our players are educated not to protest,” he told The Star.
