Sheffield Wednesday fans' column: Don't take anything for granted ...

Cardiff City fans will remember Sheffield Wednesday and our ability to stop them progressing into the play-off places.

In 2009, with nothing to play for, The Owls beat a beleaguered Cardiff side that had thrown away chance after chance to secure a top six finish.

A draw would have been enough to get the Bluebirds into sixth place. Sound familiar?

Jermaine Johnson volleyed in the winner from outside the box to put an end to Cardiff’s play-offs dreams that season and there were a few familiar faces in the Welsh side that day; Darren Purse, Roger Johnson and shiftless Jay Bothroyd led by our former manager Dave Jones.

Having seen these players at Hillsborough it’s not hard to see why they crumbled under the pressure.

It’s a cautionary tale to not take for granted your chances even if the odds are in your favour. Sheffield United are equally aware of that predicament from 2012 when we closed the gap on the automatic places. I

t’s likely to be a nervy game but I’m confident we’ve got it in us to win despite the added stress.

The atmosphere on Saturday will be reminiscent of the final game of the 2011/12 season against Wycombe Wanderers.

It will be a full house with a mighty reward at the end of the game if we hold our nerve.

When I asked for a good referee in last week’s column little did I know the Football League would appoint a former Sheffield Wednesday season ticket holder to officiate.

Sadly Fernando will have to take his chances with another referee now this ‘administrative error’ has been rectified following a complaint from our opponents on Saturday.

The big question is are we ready for promotion? We’ll find out very soon.
