Sheffield Wednesday: It's best of British for Carlos Carvalhal in the transfer market

Will Buckley was the latest addition to Carvalhal’s squad yesterday, with the winger arriving on a season-long loan from Sunderland.

And the head coach says British players, or at least those who have experienced the difficulties of playing in such a demanding division as the Championship are key to his side’s attempts to get out of it.

Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s visit of Aston Villa to Hillsborough, Carvalhal didn’t dismiss moving into the foreign market, but said

“One of the criteria is that we want to find players with experience of English football in the Championship,” he told The Star.

“It’s not, of course, the only criteria because we want quality but with the quality, we try to bring players with a better understanding of the competitiuon.

“This competition is very specific. I said to the Portugal press that the Championship it is not for the kids.

“It doesn’t translate just like this but it is a man’s (league). It is a very tough competition.

“We play Sunday, Tuesday, something I don’t understand, it doesn’t make sense, why not Wednesday or Thursday?

“After Saturday, Tuesday again. This is a competition that not all players can play in with high levels.

“The British players or players that have played here are more ready to give the answers to these types of problems.”

On tomorrow’s game, Carvalhal said he has no concerns about the depth of his squad, in the short-term at least, with the defence an issue due to injuries.

He said: “We have two centre halves and Semedo can play centre half very well.Daniel Pudil can play centre half also like he did last season one or two times.Of course if you ask me for the marathon of the season, we recover Glenn Loovens and we need more players.”
