Sheffield Wednesday: Owls fans are right to demand more from team, says Vincent Sasso

French defender Vincent Sasso says Wednesday's supporters are entitled to demand more from the side this campaign.

With 11 matches remaining, last season’s play-off finalists lie in sixth spot, only four points behind third-placed Huddersfield Town.

Although the Owls have continued to consistently grind out results, some fans have questioned their style of play and patchy displays.

But the Owls, who host relegation-haunted Burton Albion tonight, arguably delivered their best performance of the season in Saturday’s comprehensive victory over Norwich City.

Despite their scintillating attacking display against the Canaries, Wednesday have largely struggled to reproduce the high intensisty, possession-based game which took them to the brink of promotion last time around.

Sasso told The Star: “We finished sixth and reached the Play-Off Final (last year) and were only one game away from the Premier League. We had a lot of big transfers in the summer and even in January so it is normal for the fans to expect better.

“It is normal but they have to understand that you can’t build a team in one month. It takes time.”

He praised the backing the players received last weekend, saying: “We don’t hear everything but we can feel their support when they are behind us and pushing us like they did on Saturday.

“Football can turn around quickly. One week, the fans are upset because we lost (at Leeds) and then the week after we played our best game of the season.

“Burton is another game so we have to look forward and try to win.”

Sasso’s contract runs out in the summer, although he has the option of a further 12 months. The former Braga player says he plans to hold talks regarding his long-term future after their next three fixtures.

“We will see after the international break,” he said. “It is, of course, easier if you know what your future is going to be but I don’t mind to be honest.

“I’m enjoying playing at the moment. I’m focused on that and let’s see what the future brings.”

His main objective is to help the club end their 17-year top-flight exile.

“Everybody wants that,” stated Sasso.

“There are 11 games to go so it is not going to be easy. Hopefully we will be in the discussion until the end and we will see.”
