Sheffield Wednesday: Owls prepared to play waiting game as Carlos Carvalhal targets quality

Boss Carlos Carvalhal is chasing quality over quantity as he looks to strengthen his Sheffield Wednesday squad.

Carvalhal, who has so far brought in four new players, claims the Owls need “four or five” more additions before the transfer window closes on August 31.

Bringing in a new centre-back and a left-back is at the top of Carvalhal’s agenda but the Portuguese chief insists any potential new arrivals must be better than what he already has at his disposal.

“We need more players,” said Carvalhal. “We will try to bring them in as soon as possible. We have good players but we want to improve the team.

“If we wanted to bring in players, maybe we could bring in 50 who want to come to Sheffield Wednesday. We need the correct players.”

The Portuguese chief has expressed his concern over their lack of strength in depth. Carvalhal has already indicated he will field an under-strength side in Wednesday’s EFL Cup first-round clash at Cambridge United next Tuesday. The tie comes 48 hours after the Owls’ televised league opener with relegated Aston Villa.

Carvalhal said: “We want two players per position. We need a centre-back and a left-back because we just have Daniel [Pudil].

“We have three centre-backs and we also have Jose [Semedo] and Daniel who can cover the position.”
