Sheffield Wednesday are closing in on a new defender as they step up their summer recruitment drive.

The managerless Championship club have already acquired the services of centre-back Darryl Lachman for an undisclosed fee from FC Twente.

And The Star understands the Owls are on the brink of adding versatile Braga defender Vincent Sasso to their ranks.

It is believed Wednesday have agreed a deal for Sasso, but the 24-year-old has yet to undergo a medical. Capped twice at France Under-21 level, Sasso is a right-sided centre-half but can also be deployed at full-back.

Saint-Cloud-born Sasso moved to Portuguese club Braga two years ago. He has previously played for Beira Mar and FC Nantes. He made five appearances last term, with his contract at Braga not due to run out until 2017.

More defensive cover has been high on Wednesday’s priority list since they released Joe Mattock, Lewis Buxton and Kamil Zayatte last month.

Carlos Carvalhal, who is poised to be appointed Wednesday’s new general manager, spent some of his playing and coaching career at Braga.

Discussions have taken place with Swindon Town over Mark Cooper becoming the Owls’ new head coach and working alongside Carvalhal.

It is believed Wednesday are waiting to sign off on Cooper before announcing the duo as a management team.

Talks over a compensation package are thought to have held up the deal as Cooper, who steered the Robins to the League One Play-Off Final last year, has one more year left on his contract.

Although Cooper is still officially in charge of the Robins, who are set to begin pre-season training today, bookmakers BetVictor have already started offering odds on the 46-year-old’s successor at The County Ground.

First-team coach Luke Williams, Brian McDermott and Darren Ferguson are rumoured to be possible candidates.
