Defending champion Jordan Spieth suffered an amazing collapse in the final round of the Masters to leave Danny Willett taking his first major title on Sunday.

Spieth birdied four holes in a row from the sixth to reach the turn with a five-shot lead and certain to follow Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods in winning back-to-back titles at Augusta National

Sheffield golfer Willett - who became a father for the first time last week - demonstrated excellent consistency and real nerve to post an level par 72 on Saturday, leaving him on level par for the tournament.

Bogies on the first and fourth threatened to send Willett careering down the leaderboard as plenty of other golfers did.

But back to back birdies on six and seven put him back on track.

Birdies and bogeys came back on fourth from 12 through 15 before the 28-year-old closed his round with three consecutive pars.

Willett sits three shots behind leader and defending champion Jordan Speith, for whom a double bogey on the last denied him a healthy lead over the field.

Perhaps the most eye-catching performance of the day was that of veteran Bernhard Langer who sits in a tie for third, two shots off the lead as he chases his third Masters win and first in 23 years.

Rory McIlroy's challenge is on the ropes after he posted a five over par 77 to drop to two over par for the tournament.

Sheffield's Matt Fitzpatrick remains on course for a decent finish in Augusta.
