Shisha pipe fines for Sheffield bar owners

Sami Hassan, aged 30, of Sheffield, who was in control of the shisha bar to the rear of Diyafa Station at The Wicker, pleaded guilty to failing to prevent smoking in a smoke-free place.

Mr Hassan was ordered to pay £1,566 in fines and costs.

Adam Hussein, 26, operator of Sapphire Lounge, Attercliffe Road, also pleaded guilty for allowing people to smoke shisha pipes inside the premises.

Hussein, of Bradford, was ordered to pay a total of £1,910 in fines and costs.

Sheffield Council’s Health and Safety Enforcement Team had issued warnings to both premises.

As well as the fines, the premises will continue to be monitored by the team.

Ian Ashmore, head of environmental regulation, said: “We want to make it clear that we do not tolerate smoking in what should be smoke-free places. The law is clear on this and if a business is operating as a shisha café, the premises must meet the necessary requirements.

“Both premises were on our radar following previous warnings, but they chose to ignore those warnings and have paid the price. I hope they’ll learn from this and will run their businesses legitimately going forward.

“As well as our legal obligations, we are committed to improving health and wellbeing in the city, and we know that smoking and passive smoking has a direct impact on people’s health, particularly in enclosed areas. We will continue to randomly inspect these premises and if they are found offending again, further action will be taken.”
