Skipper Billy Sharp targets home improvements at Sheffield United

Sheffield United skipper Billy Sharp admits his side must improve their form at Bramall Lane if they are to escape the clutches of League One football.

Sharp will lead United into their sixth season in English football’s third tier after being named club captain by new boss Chris Wilder, a fellow Blades supporter.

And Sharp, who scored 21 goals last season as United finished a disappointing 11th, told The Star: “Promotion-winning teams win their games at home, it’s as simple as that. It’s a simple formula; win your home games, and then go away from home and get what you can.

“When you’re confident at home, you come out and sometimes feel like you’re 1-0 up before the game has even kicked off.

“Sometimes last season, we came out and it was very edgy. At times we went ahead and seemed to settle a little, but too many times we went behind and seemed to be chasing games.

“We need to change that if we’re to be successful.”

United were beaten eight times on home soil last season, and their disappointing end to the campaign - coupled with their table-topping wage bill - saw Nigel Adkins, Wilder’s predecessor, relieved of his duties.

“It was very frustrating,” Sharp added.

“With the squad we have, we should have been going for automatic promotion and when that was taken away from us, we went for the play-offs but got nowhere near.

“We didn’t win enough games and couldn’t establish any consistency. But there’s a lot to look forward to with the new manager, and I’m sure the fans will be back to support us in numbers next season.”
