And Howarth admits Sheffield have had a rotten season '“ so glory for him or colleague Charles Wright would be justice for the supporters.

Said Howarth: 'I'd love for both me and Charles to do well '“ as long as I finish above him of course!

'It would be great if we could win some more silverware for the Sheffield fans because they've gone through a crazy season like all of us and it's certainly not what we ever saw coming.

'None of us can put our finger on where or why things went wrong but ever since me and Charles won the Pairs at Somerset the night before Cardiff, I don't think anything has gone right for Sheffield.

'It's been such a totally opposite season to what we had last year.

'We couldn't do a thing wrong last season no matter how much we were up against it.

'We went to Glasgow for example with half a team and a couple of youngsters in the side and still managed to beat them. 'We went on to win the league against a strong Ipswich side and this season things just haven't happened for us at all have they? 'Unfortunately that's sport though and while you'd love to win everything every year, that's not the way it works. 'We know how much it means to the supporters and as someone who's been at Sheffield a few years now, it hurts me too.

'But the Sheffield fans deserve better and they deserve to have one last thing to cheer about before a very long winter.

'It's a big meeting that everyone is going to want to win of course.

'It's coming to the end of the year, it's a very prestigious event, and I for one would certainly love to add it to my CV.

'I've had a lot of good meetings at Sheffield this year, scored double figures plenty of times and I'm hopeful I can do well.

'Owlerton is a great race track though and while I may be one of the home riders, I don't know of too many people who don't like racing at Sheffield so it's not going to be easy at all, and I'm going to have to work extremely hard to win it.'

Tigers head to Scunthorpe on Friday night in Championship action (7.30).
