The £850,000 cycling facility was opened by East Midlands Trains in 2014, and currently offers storage space for 400 bikes, along with changing rooms, toilets, bicycle hire and a repair shop.

Now permission has been granted by Sheffield Council to carry out the second phase of the project, which will provide space for another 156 bicycles on a new mezzanine floor within the existing bike hub building.

The cycle hub is in the south wing of the main station building - facing the taxi rank - and was formed from bays formerly used for a parcel office and storage.

Although the development will be on East Midlands Trains’ own land, listed building consent was needed from the council.

Midland Station is Grade II listed and opened in the early 1900s.

A report by planning officers, giving the reasons for approval, said: “The works will preserve the special character of this part of the building, as the mezzanine will be a free-standing structure which does not interfere with the external walls and roof.

“The proposal will deliver sustainability benefits by encouraging sustainable access to the site as a result of increasing the capacity of a facility which is obviously well-used.”
