A planning application has now been submitted to Sheffield Council, seeking permission to turn The Plough at Sandygate, opposite Hallam FC, into a Sainsbury’s convenience store.

The deadline for comments on the proposals has been extended to September following pressure from the Save the Plough and the Sporting Heritage of Sandygate group, which said the application had been lodged during the peak holiday season.

The Plough was listed as an asset of community value last year. It is the first test of the protection offered by such status in Sheffield.

“We are aiming to get a debate at the next full meeting of the council to ask for a city-wide strategy to stop these predatory retailers taking away more and more of our heritage,” said the group’s chairman, Peter Duff.

Meanwhile the Sheffield branch of the Campaign for Real Ale is seeking ‘asset’ status for the University Arms on Western Bank. The bid has been opposed by the University of Sheffield. Lawyers acting on its behalf said CAMRA was trying to ‘limit the university’s ability’ to redevelop the site.
