Developers are transforming the city centre site at the corner of Arundel Street and Matlida Street into a block that will house more than 240 students from September.

The famous Gatecrasher nightclub, which spent five years in the older Roper and Wreakes factory, was destroyed by fire in June 2007.

The new building will be part of the West One accommodation portfolio. Marketing and residential manager for West One Andrea Marsden said: “One of the big advantages of Gatecrasher Apartments is the location near Sheffield Hallam University along with all the amenities of this exciting area of the city.

“At the same time, the standard of accommodation is very high and offers good value for money. The communal areas are impressive. There is a gym that does not require membership and a cinema room with a big screen for students. The lounge will have facilities such as table tennis and table football.

“The apartments have a scheduled completion date of July ready for letting to students from September 1.”

The six-storey building will offer 243 beds, mostly in clusters of three, four and five, all en-suite. But there will also be 90 one-bed studios each with a kitchen.

The Gatecrasher complex will have shops and offices at ground level.

The West One accommodation portfolio includes student flats in Sellers Wheel in Arundel Street, Huttons Buildings in West Street and at Broomgrove Apartments on Broomgrove Road, as well as the West One residential, leisure and commercial development in Fitzwilliam Street.

West One Student Accommodation is part of Sheffield-based City Estates, which has also developed student flats and city centre residential developments in Glasgow, Nottingham Bradford and London has a diverse nationwide investment portfolio.

City Estates managing director Dale Fixter said: “The delivery of student accommodation is an increasingly competitive market. There is nothing ordinary about Gatecrasher Apartments. Generous proportions, quality fittings and painstaking attention detail throughout set it apart from the rest and at very competitive rents.”

The apartment block will have an environmentally-friendly roof and be part of the community heat and power scheme linked to the Bernard Road incinerator.

The building was designed by Cartwright Pickard, who also designed the nearby Sellers Wheel.

Rent for shared Gatecrasher Apartments will be from £110 a week per person, including all bills, with studios from £135 a week per person. A show apartment is due to open on July 1.
