Success as Sheffield para athletes win gold

Sheffield-based athletes are celebrating after scooping three gold and two bronze medals at an international open championship held in Slovenia.

The Team GB para table tennis players, including Paralympic silver medalist Will Bayley, brought an impressive five medals home from the Slovenian Open.

The squad, who are based at the English Institute of Sport, Attercliffe, also include Paralympic medallists Aaron McKibbin, Sara Head and Paul Davies.

World number one in his class and Paralympic 2012 star Will, who lives in Sheffield, secured a gold medal in the men’s singles, and bronze medal in the team event with playing partner Paul Karabardak.

Will, aged 25, said: “I’m really proud of being world number one and I’ve learnt from London and trained so hard since then, as I feel like I’ve still got something to prove to myself.”

Fellow Sheffield-based para table tennis player Aaron Mckibbon, 21, secured gold in the team event to add to Team GB’s accolade of medals from the competition.

He is now training hard for the German Open at the end of the month.

Aaron, aged 21, said: “To win a gold medal is great and I’m glad all my hard work has paid off.”

The EIS Sheffield trained players Rob Davies and Paul Davies secured gold in the team event and Sara Head added a bronze medal to the team’s successes.
