Telegraph Picture of the Week: Millhouses gets that sinking feeling as road caves in with 8ft hole
A section of Hutcliffe Wood Road, in Millhouses, collapsed this week '“ opening up a sink hole about 8ft deep. Sheffield Council quickly closed the road and diverted traffic, while engineers '“ seen here measuring the pit with a tape measure '“ investigated the cause. Theories swapped locally included the possible collapse of one of the old drift mines driven into the steep wooded hillside to extract ganister, a stone used to line furnaces.
