They were the Victorian masters of musical comedy who took the theatre world by storm.
Today, more than a 100 years after their partnership broke up, the works of Gilbert and Sullivan are as popular as they ever were.
Now May 2 has been designated Global Gilbert and Sullivan Day, a special international celebration.
And in Sheffield, the day will be marked by the city’s Dore Gilbert and Sullivan Society as they take to the stage at the Montgomery Theatre with a revival of one of the partnership’s best loved shows, The Gondoliers.
The company present the classic Venetian musical comedy of mistaken identities at the Surrey Street theatre from April 29 to May 2.
