FORMER Conservative councillor Anne Smith, who twice held the balance of power during her time at Sheffield Town Hall, is to stand again, four years after losing her seat.

She is aiming to regain Dore and Totley from the Liberal Democrats, challenging deputy Lib Dem leader Colin Ross.

There are no Tories on the council at present, even though they received almost 50,000 votes last year. The party will field candidates in all wards next May.

Mrs Smith, who temporarily left the local party, said: “There is a mountain to climb, but with our new collective strengths and our spirit of optimism and co-operation, we can make this a reality.”
