Olympic torch: South Yorkshire motorists warned to expect congestion

Thousands of people are expected to cheer on the torch as it makes its way through South Yorkshire - but motorists are warning to expect delays as road closures and diversions are put in place.

Monday’s diversions include:


Town centre - closure of town centre stops with localised diversions. Passengers recommended to use Barnsley Interchange between 11.30am and 2pm;

Lundwood and Hoyle Mill – buses diverted via Burton Road – passengers recommended not to travel between 1.20pm and 2pm;

Huddersfield Road – buses diverted onto Gawber Road from 3-3.15pm;

Barugh Green and Kebrough – bus delays 3.15-3.45pm.


City centre – closure of Leopold, Pinstone and Surrey Street with diversions – passengers recommended to use Arundel Gate between 3pm and 9.30pm;

Chapeltown – delays 4.50-5.10pm. Buses diverted;

Ecclesfield and Parson Cross – delays 5-5.30pm.

Hillsborough – delays 5.40-6pm;

Penistone Road - delays from 5.50-6.10pm. Inbound buses on Penistone Road diverted;

Shalesmoor – delays to all public transport as torch moves from Penistone Road to Netherthorpe Road from 6.10-6.25pm;

Brook Hill and hospitals – delays to West Street services from at least 6.20-6.45pm;

Ecclesall – Ecclesall Road closed 6.30-7pm.

Moorfoot area – closures between Moore Street and Eyre Street roundabouts.
