More than £200,000 is being spent on carrying out a study assessing Sheffield’s two rival options for a potential new HS2 station - by the same organisation planning millions in cuts to local transport services.
South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive is spending £235,000 on the report, which is examining the strengths of the Meadowhall and city centre options for the station.
The work is being carried out by consulting engineers Pell Frischmann and is due to be completed by March.
A further £47,000 is being spent by SYPTE on ‘media and engagement work’ for HS2 by IPB Communications.
Details have been revealed in a report to Sheffield City Region Combined Authority, which represents the area’s local councils.
It comes just a few days after plans to make £7.6m cuts were unveiled by SYPTE. Its proposals could see up to 50 jobs lost and information centres closed.
SYPTE interim director of strategy Julie Hurley said spending on the report is necessary.
She said: “It is crucial that the SCR looks to, and prepares for, future transport needs. These studies provide information to determine how HS2 can best serve the SCR and what projects could be brought forward, to benefit our area ahead of HS2.
“Studies will help inform local decision making so that the SCR leaders are in a better position to ask Government for what SCR wants and needs for HS2.”
Peter Howarth, from the Killamarsh and Renishaw HS2 Action Group, said: “It is wrong we are losing money on the infrastructure we have to do this. I find it absolutely preposterous. I think there will be more cuts to pay for HS2. This is the tip of a massive iceberg.”
