Twelve ways to wine and dine in Sheffield on Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is just around the corner - and with it the annual scramble to book a dining experience.

For brunch

Sheffield is spoiled for choice when it comes to eating breakfast out.

Tamper Coffee in the city centre remains the Holy Grail of brunch for many thanks to its inventive, New Zealand inspired dishes, super strong coffee and casual approach.

You can’t book, so get there early to guarantee a seat.

Fancy a night away in a log cabin but can’t quite stretch the budget? Head to The Cabin at the bottom of The Moor for USA-style pancakes and waffles, with everything from fruit to bacon and maple syrup. The log cabin decor, complete with bear, will make you feel a world away.

If breakfast in bed is the aim, there are various Sheffield shops and suppliers to make the meal restaurant standard.

Stock up on exquisite pastries from 4 Eyes Patisserie - available at various independent shops, including the Captain’s Cup on Ecclesall Road - or Seven Hills Bakery on Sharrowvale Road and team with tea from the Birdhouse Tea Company in Nether Edge.

For a continental option; try fine meats and cheeses, including the Little Mesters made in Kelham Island, from Porter Brook Deli, also on Sharrowvale.

For drinks

Public is Sheffield’s newest, uber cool cocktail joint, tucked away under the town hall in what used to be a men’s toilets.

Concoctions made with unusual ingredients and minimum waste, plus high-end bar food, are sure to impress.

Sensual beats and Cuban Mules will add some spice to any evening spent at Cubanas, in Leopold Square, in the city centre.

The mojitos in particular are worth a visit and the margarita may be the best in Sheffield.

Gin lovers can share their passion at the new bar dedicated to Mother’s Ruin on Abbeydale Road.

The Gin Bar has an aptly vintage decor, huge glasses and an astonishing array of gins to choose from.

For vegans/vegetarians

Make No Bones, in Heeley, has a fully vegan menu that anyone can appreciate.

The skill in making plant based food of endless variety has been recognised nationally, with regulars recommending the seitan ribs or vegan fish and chips.

In Crookesmoor, The Closed Shop is drawing diners from far and wide with its ‘try it Tuesday’ vegan menu, featuring a choice of desserts, starters and mains.

On Sharrowvale Road, the pretty Pom is also offering up a special vegan feast for Valentine’s Day. Places are limited

For a romantic dinner

A roaring fire, stone built bar and the wonder of the Peak District outside... The Peacock at Rowsley has all the ingredients for a romantic weekend away, or just a meal.

Walk off the menu with one of the many hikes nearby, or call into Bakewell for a full day of indulgence.

Not all romantic meals have to be based around Italian or modern British food.

The Front Room in Hillsborough is an Indian with a fine dining approach - think white suited waiters and curry by candlelight.

Service is fantastic and we recommend the featherlight puri starters, slow cooked lamb handi curry and home made pickles.

On Ecclesall Road, All Siam Thai restaurant is consistently busy and offers consistently good standards on an ever changing street. There are all the little details you’d expect, white tablecloths, bowing, smiling waitresses, intricately carved garnishes atop beautiful dishes from South East Asia.

There are plenty of interesting stir fry and other mains for those not in the mood for one of their famous curries.
