UK's grim coronavirus death toll is now the same as capacity of Sheffield United stadium

In a stark reminder of how many victims have been claimed by COVID-19, the current death toll stands at 32,692, a figure which many people will struggle to comprehend and picture.

But to help understand that colossal figure, the Blades’ Bramall Lane stadium has a capacity of 32,702 – just ten above the death toll figure.

It means every seat inside in the stadium represents a UK victim of the deadly pandemic and helps envisage how many lives have been sadly lost over the last few months.

Latest figures recorded a further 627 deaths in all settings across the last 24 hours.

In Sheffield, there have been 2,248 cases and 234 deaths.

Across South Yorkshire, in Doncaster there have been 522 cases and 126 deaths while in Rotherham there have been 761 cases with 131 deaths.

Barnsley has recorded 705 cases, with 105 deaths.

Earlier today, NHS England said the total number of reported Covid-19 deaths in hospitals in England had increased by 350 to 23,709, taking the UK wide total to 32,692.

In total in the UK, there have been 226,464 cases.

In terms of deaths, the UK is the second worst country in the world, second only to America where 82,555 people have died.

The UK moved ahead of Italy’s death toll last week, where 30,911 people have died.
