University old boy returns to top position

SHEFFIELD Hallam University has appointed a new Pro Vice Chancellor.

Professor Roger Eccleston is taking up the role in charge of the Faculty of Arts, Computing, Engineering and Sciences during the coming week.

He previously worked at the university from 2004 to 2007, as director of the Materials and Engineering Research Institute. He returns to Sheffield Hallam from his most recent role as Dean of the School of Science and Technology at Nottingham Trent University.

Prof Eccleston was previously Director of Technology at the Science and Technology Facilities Council where he led the technology unit.

The facility provides engineering and technology services to major UK science projects and facilities, including to the Large Hadron Collider.

He is a graduate of Sheffield Hallam’s predecessor institution, having studied applied science at Sheffield City Polytechnic.

He also has a PhD in physics from The University of Warwick.

Prof Eccleston said: “I’m very excited to be returning to Sheffield Hallam and reacquainting myself with many former colleagues and meeting lots of new ones.

“I am looking forward to leading the Faculty of Arts, Computing, Engineering and Sciences.

“The strength and range of disciplines and excellent research provide the basis for an exciting and innovative learning environment.”

Prof Eccleston will take up his new role at Sheffield Hallam University from Monday.
